A magnitude-2.9 earthquake, the strongest-ever since early this year, on Sunday hit the site of a hydropower plant located in central Vietnam’s Quang Nam Province.
The quake occurred at 2:39 pm (local time) in Bac Tra My District, an area that has been hit by hundreds of quakes over the last three years, with its epicenter located at 6km deep underground, according to the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center under the Vietnam Global Physics Institute.
It struck at 15°362′ North latitude and 108°107′ East longitude in the area of the Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant, the center added.
Many residents in Bac Tra My said they heard a big explosion accompanied by a shake that strongly rattled the district.
Crowds rushed out of their homes for safety and there were no reports of casualties or property damage.
Nguyen Van Thanh, a local fisherman, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that this is the first time he has felt such a strong tremble though he had experienced many quakes in the locality.
Thanh added his fishing boat and many homes in Bac Tra My were strongly shaken by the tremor that lasted for about ten seconds.
The area of the Song Tranh 2 hydropower plant has been rocked by hundreds of quakes since 2011. The strongest-ever quake occurred in the district on November 15, 2012, measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale. It lasted for several seconds, panicking thousands of locals.
To cope with earthquakes, authorities last August conducted the rehearsal of a response to a magnitude-6.2 earthquake involving more than 2,000 people in Bac Tra My.
