Police in Ho Chi Minh City detained eight alleged members of a robbery ring on Saturday who preyed on motorbike deliverymen by creating elaborate diversions.

The members including both men and women, aged 32 to 63.

Their most recent victim was a man identified only as P.M.Truong.

Truong was transporting a box containing 672 bottles of medicine on his motorbike at 11am on May 16.

While stopped at an intersection in District 11, police say, Le Van Hung, the 43-year-old ringleader pulled up next to Truong and pushed over the box.

Once the deliveryman stopped to refasten his cargo, police say, Hung and his accomplices staged a bike crash and fight to distract Truong while they made off with his cargo.

Police claim they caught up to the gang and recovered Truong’s box along with 100 pairs of clothes the gang allegedly stole earlier that day in a similar fashion.

Police say the suspects confessed to having operated in this fashion for a long time, preying on motorists hauling oversized cargo on motorbikes.

Police have asked victims of similar crimes to visit the street crime office at No. 83, Tan Hoa District, Ward 14, District 6, or call investigators at 08 3969 4848.
