Built during the same time period according to French architecture, each of the opera houses of Hanoi, the northern port city of Hai Phong, and Ho Chi Minh City have their own special characteristics.


The following are three opera houses built by the French in the late 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century.


Hanoi Opera House was built in 1901 at Trang Tien Street, to reproduce the model of Opera in Paris. The 600-seat theatre is one of the outstanding architectural works in the capital. Tourists in Hanoi often visit the theatre, the Cathedral, President o Chi Minh’s mausoleum and the one-pillar pagoda.

Construction of Hai Phong Opera House at Hoang Van Thu street was started in 1904 and completed in 1912. Major cultural and political events have been held at the 400-seat theatre.

The building of The Ho Chi Minh City Opera House at Dong Khoi street, district 1, began in 1898 and finished in 1900.

The theatre was built according to the Gothique architectural style which was very much in vogue in France in the late 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. It has a capacity of 1,800 seats with modern sound and light equipment./.
