Vietnamese American sues tabloid for reportedly libeling her with ‘rape’ stories

A Vietnamese American has taken legal action against a Vietnamese tabloid for allegedly concocting stories that she raped many taxi drivers – one of whom was said to be forced to have sex with her over 30 times in two days – in the northern province of Hai Duong last year.

Pham Thi Thanh Ngoc, 40, said Thursday that a Hanoi court had received her complaint and Nguoi Dua Tin (Informant) newspaper, headquartered in the capital, is the accused.

Ngoc claimed that the tabloid had published on its website a number of articles with made-up contents that have seriously affected her reputation and prestige.

She therefore demanded the paper compensate her with VND360 million (US$17,000) for the travel expenses and costs of food and accommodation she have had to cover so far to deal with the aftermath of the purportedly fabricated stories.

She also requested Nguoi Dua Tin to correct all the articles and made public apologies to her.

Ngoc previously accused that the tabloid smeared her with its articles on a “nymphomaniac” who reportedly raped many taxi drivers – one of them more than 30 times in two days – in Hai Duong in 2013.

Of these articles are two published on December 26 and 28 that told of Ngoc luring “80-90 percent of Hai Duong taxi drivers” into her private home in the province, drugging the men with aphrodisiacs, and raping them.
