The Informal Media Gathering on “Welcoming the 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations Indonesia – Vietnam was organised in late March with the participation of the Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Mayerfas, Indonesian Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, President of Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organisations (HUFO), Chairman of Vietnam-Indonesia Friendship Association and many other honourable guests.
Addressing at the gathering, Ambassador Mayerfas affirmed that the strategic partnership has laid a strong foundation for bilateral cooperation development between Vietnam and Indonesia. He said thatthe year 2013 was regarded as one of the most important milestones in political cooperation between Indonesia and Vietnam. This was marked by a number of historical events.
Political relations increasingly enhanced
Political relations between the two countries proceeded well noted by a number of mutual visits between government officials, members of parliaments, businessmen, and other stakeholders in an intensive manner under bilateral, regional and international cooperation. Furthermore, the good relationship is also reflected from mutual supports for the nomination of representatives of respective countries at regional and international bodies and organisations based on the principle of reciprocity and friendship
The climax of political cooperation between Indonesia and Vietnam occurred when both countries agreed to upgrade the level of cooperation from comprehensive to strategic partnership as officially stated in the Joint Statement between the two Heads of States during the state visit of Vietnamese President to Indonesia on June 27 – 28, 2013.
At regional and international level, the relations between Indonesia and Vietnam continuously improve. Both countries also mutually support each other’s nomination in regional and international bodies based on the principles of reciprocity and friendship and conduct collective efforts in solving regional and international issues.
The Indonesian Consul revealed that Vietnam and Indonesia have many similarities and identical experience in struggling for independence. The bilateral and traditional relations between both countries have lasted for more than 50 years. It has always developed not only in the level of elites but also in the lives of communities. He affirmed that this relationship will continuously be strengthened and developed by leaders and people of both countries.
There are two mechanisms of bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Vietnam including Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) and Joint Commission for Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation (JCESTC). JCBC is co-chaired by Indonesian Foreign Minister and Vietnamese Foreign Minister and becomes the main cooperation mechanism to study and provide guidance related to strategic partnership; whereas, JCESTC is chaired by Trade Ministers of both countries.
Trade & investment cooperation continuously improve
Vietnam and Indonesia have set to achieve trade volume of US$5 billion in 2015 and US$10 billion in 2018. In 2013, both sides signed many MoUs including Agricultural Commodities Cooperation, MoU on Cooperation in Energy Sector and MoU on Financial Cooperation. Both countries also agreed to establish Sub-Commission on Food and Energy Security Cooperation (JCFESC) in 2014 under Joint Commission on Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation (JCESTC).
Indonesia is currently ranked 26th in the list of investor countries in Vietnam with 38 projects valued US$320.52 million for the period 1988 – 2013. The investment value which had been realised so far reached US$144.07 million. But it was predicted that more than US$2 billion of Indonesia’s investment listed through the third party.
The Indonesia’s investment comprising processing industry, accommodation, food and beverage service, health and social support, mine ores, transportation, wholesale, retail, repair, agro, agriculture, aquatic, arts and entertainment, construction, administration and supportive services, information and telecommunication, and cement, etc.
Vietnam has now 8 investment projects in Indonesia valued at US$49.66 million focusing in fields of oil exploration, retail and export-import, information and broadcasting, motorbike, and automobile spare parts.
