(Cinet)- Ponagar tower festival 2014 opened in Nha Trang city of the central province of Khanh Hoa on April 20.
Located in Vinh Phuoc ward, Nha Trang city, Ponagar Tower was built in typical architectural style of Cham people. It has been recognized as a national historical site since 1979 and the Ponagar Tower Festival has been acknowledged as a national festival since 2001 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The 1,200-year-old Ponagar-dedicated tower, built using a unique Cham technique, was recognised as a national historical relic site in 1979. The Goddess Ponagar Festival is the biggest religious festival held from the 21st to 25th day of the third lunar month every year to commemorate the Goddess Thien Y A Na – Holy Mother of the Cham community in the central region. At the opening ceremony, various traditional dances of Cham people were performed to honour the beauty of the Cham culture.
Folk rituals such as a requiem and the release of flower floating candles will be accompanied by a ceremony to pray for peace, happiness and prosperity of the nation, and cultural activities honoring the spiritual life of the ethnic people in the central southern region.
The festival ends on April 22.
