The volume shipped during the first three months of the year reached 601,000 tonnes, up 24.8% compared with the first quarter of 2013.
Germany and the US, Vietnam’s two largest coffee consumers, imported 14.5% and 9.8% of its total coffee shipments during the first quarter.
The average export price received in the first two months dropped by 10.2% against 2013 prices to US$1,880 per tonne.
According to the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, drought conditions that have persisted since November of last year have put 40% of the Central Highlands growing area at risk of water shortages.
The association forecasts that Vietnam’s coffee output in the 2013-2014 season may drop by 10-15% from that of the previous crop.
