It is the first successful surgery of this kind in Vietnam and among a few similar cases in the world.
The patient, whose nose was injured in an incident at his home the northern province of Ha Tinh, was hospitalized to the Viet Duc Hospital in the Vietnamese capital on February 17.
The severed part, 2 cm by 3 cm in size, was kept in a box containing ice after being found on the floor of the patient’s house, said Dr. Dao Van Giang, a member of the surgical team.
This is an extremely difficult surgery as blood vessels in the nasal area are very small, only about 0.4-0.5 mm in diameter.
In addition, the vessels shrank after being broken, so doctors had to extract several veins, each of which was 0.8 cm in length, from the patient’s thighs to reconnect the broken arteries and veins together.
Doctors had to use very small medical threads to sew the vessels back together with the aid of microscopes, using their highest magnifications.
The stitching required extreme accuracy and dedication, since only a minor mistake could cause the vessels to be blocked, leading to caseation of the reconnected part, Dr Giang said.
After the surgery, which lasted from 4:00 pm of February 17 to 5:00 am the next morning, the nose of the patient has showed initial signs of recovery.
It is expected that the patient will be discharged in two or three days to come.
This is the first time such a rare surgery has been performed successfully in Vietnam. In the world, only more than 10 similar cases have been recorded so far.
With the advanced microsurgical techniques that are available, doctors now can reconnect severed parts of hands, arms, ears, lips, noses, penises and others, Dr Giang said.
He advised that the severed body part be preserved in ice and the patient should be hospitalized for a reconnection surgery as soon as possible.
