The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting (NCHF) has warned provinces in the central and southern regions, including the Central Highlands of Tay Nguyen of drought, adding that however, the situation would not be as severe as in 2013.
The centre also advised coastal localities to guard against the intrusion of salt water as water levels in rivers recede as a consequence of less-than-normal rains.
From April to August, the rainfall in the central region is predicted to be lower than the average level in the same period of many last years, and the drought situation in the region will only gradually improve at the end of August.
Meanwhile the rainy season in the Central Highlands and the southern region is forecast to come later than normal, falling in the latter half of May or early June.
The flow of water in most rivers in the central region and Central Highlands in March and April will also reduces by 20-40 percent, even 50 percent compared to the average level of many years.-VNA
