The biggest festival praying for good fishing harvest (Cau Ngu festival) in the capital city

Considered as the biggest Cau Ngu festivals in Thua Thien Hue province, in the morning of 11 February 2014 (12 January of Lunar New Year), Cau Ngu festival of Thai Duong village, Thuan An town, Phu vang district officially took place in front of Thai Duong village temple. Thousands of people and visitors joined the festival.




The festival took place within 02 days from 11 to 12 January of Lunar New Year. According to that, in the afternoon of 11 January the offering sacrifices to the gods which were followed by lion dances and Hue song performances. In the early morning of 12 January (0.30 a.m.), a ceremony praying for peace was held. All boat owners with black “ao dai”, white trousers and red towels on their heads in turn attended the ceremony. Before the main sacrifice offering ceremony, the village elders burnt incenses to pray the God for giving people in fishing villages good health and good, sound sea journeys.


Besides praying in the village temple villagers set worshipping tables to pray for good weather and great fishing results, full of wealth and comfort. On each boat or ship at the ceremony, people also decorated with lights and flowers.


In the early morning (12 January), the main ritual began at 4.00. An oration was offered to gods and village elders, praying for peaceful country, prosperous people, good weather, and good harvest.


After the rituals, people were waiting for performances re-enacting works of fishers, expressing activities on the land, in the water and boat racing in Tam Giang lagoon.


Then, a ceremony to begin a fish catching took place in Thuan An town.


Cau Ngu festival is a great festival of all people with full of optimism and hope. The festival encourages fishers in Thuan An town to be stronger to overcome difficulties in their work.
