On January 21, the Federal Office for Online Security said about 16 million internet users have had their email addresses and passwords stolen in a wide-ranging criminal internet attack in Germany.

The theft was discovered through an analysis of malicious software that an attacker can use to carry out tasks like collecting user information or sending spam.

The agency said that the online criminals had managed to infect millions of computers with a program that would enrol them on to a network from where data could be stolen.

The Federal Office for Online Security has set up a web page where users can check whether their accounts were affected, although the site crashed soon after going live.

At present, the web page could not be used due to overloading./.
