There is a new option for Ho Chi Minh City residents to put inside a red envelop and give as lucky money this Tet: two new versions of US banknotes that even the US Federal Reserve would be surprised to see.

Dozens of booths selling gold notes that replicate US two- and 100- dollar bills have been erected on many busy intersections across the city, capturing the attention of pedestrians.

The gold color of the “banknotes” is believed to bring good luck to recipients, according to the vendors.

A one-sided $2 bill costs VND20,000, while a $100 note fetches VND25,000. Those printed on both sides are twice as expensive.

Vendors reveal that the products are imported from China and sold online as well as on the street.

Nguyen Hoang Minh, deputy director of the HCMC branch of the State Bank of Vietnam, said the golden dollars are completely eligible for sale and do not violate the foreign exchange ordinance.

Minh said these banknotes are considered fine art and people only buy them to give as gifts rather than a means of payment.
