Construction workers prepare for the restoration of the Notre Dame Cathedral |
The Notre Dame Cathedral, which is situated in the heart of HCMC, began restoration last Friday, marking the first overhaul after 137 years of its existence.
Multiple parts of the old structure, including its roof and windows, have deteriorated over the years. According to a source from the Saigon Archdiocese, the restoration project worth around VND100 billion (US$4.4 million) is scheduled to be finished in June 2020 as it will take time to import materials from France and Germany.
While its restoration is in progress, cathedral tours will be restricted to guarantee safety for visitors and ensure the project can be done on time.
The cathedral is not only a key worshiping place for Catholics but also an historical, cultural and architectural icon and a popular tourist destination in the city. Images of the cathedral can also be found in tons of wedding photo albums.
The project will upgrade the drainage system, the roof, the windows and other items with signs of deterioration.
Access to the cathedral area is restricted |
