Vietnam commences 2nd phase of $16.2mn healthcare program funded by ADB

The second phase of a healthcare program exclusively dedicated to people in Vietnam’s Central Highlands region was initiated in Dak Lak on Monday.

The Asian Development Bank has committed US$16.2 million to the program for the five years from 2014, Vietnamese Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen said at the launch ceremony in Krong Buk District.


The initial goal of the program is to provide medical checks for one million needy residents in the Central Highlands.


The Central Highlands is one of the six key economic regions of Vietnam, consisting of five provinces, Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, and Lam Dong.


Thousands of locals of Krong Buk District attending yesterday ceremony were able to get free medical checks and medicines, whereas the Ministry of Health also handed over hundreds of gifts to local poverty-stricken households.


Also on Monday, Minister Tien attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the Krong Buk General Hospital. The 100-bed hospital has a total investment of VND126 billion ($5.87 million), according to the minister.


Elsewhere in Dak Lak, the Ministry of Health and Vietnamese realty developer Vingroup gave away 10,585 insurance cards worth VND2 billion ($93,205) to poor households from Dak Lak, Kon Tum, and Dak Nong.
