During recent inspections at the Topaz 2 and Ruby 1 apartment tenements in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City, local police caught these foreigners using information and telecommunication equipment to illegally organize and operate sports betting activities on the Internet in several apartments.

They told police a person in South Korea had sent them to Vietnam to work for the betting ring at a salary ranging from US$1,700 to $2,800 per person per month.

Despite operating in Vietnam, this ring only served foreigners, from 7 am to 7 pm every day, ring’s members said.

The betting focused on such sports as football, basketball, baseball, and horse races, they said, adding that betting payments were made through the South Korean banking system.

The ring operated in Vietnam to avoid detection by South Korean police, they said.

HCMC police have confiscated all the equipment used in the illegal betting activities, gave administrative fines to the ring’s members, and ordered them to be deported.

In a similar case, Vietnamese police have handed over to their South Korean counterparts six Korean nationals who had been arrested for setting up gambling websites for about 4,000 gamblers in South Korea, with the total money involved amounting to 10 billion won (US$9.28).

Police officers in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau last Friday said they transferred to South Korean police the six online gambling organizers: Im Seung Woo, 35; Kim Seul Gi, 24; Jung Bon Yong, 33; Lee Yong Hu, 33; Lim Young Jae, 34; and Han Seok Gyeong, 34.

Local police captured the organizers on Wednesday, January 21, in a villa they had rented on Le Hong Phong Street, Thang Tam Ward, Vung Tau City, with the aid of a police unit from the Ministry of Public Security.
