According to the police, Nguyen Quoc Vuong was carrying 1.46 kg of methamphetamine and anaesthetic ketamine and 1,300 ecstasy pills, which were hidden in milk cans.

Later police search in Vuong’s residence found 41 bullets for his gun, US dollar and dong notes worth $25,000 in total, and a stun baton.

Police alleged that Vuong was running a large Ddrug ring in the city, which they have investigated since late last year.

Vuong, 40, was convicted of murder in 1993 when he was head of a protection racket operating in the city bus station. He was released after serving a seven-year sentence and turned to dealing drugs, according to investigators.

Colonel Nguyen Van Cong, Vice Director of Hai Phong Police, said the investigation is being expanded.

Vietnam’s Penal Code says those convicted of possessing/smuggling 100 grams of heroin or cocaine or 300 grams of other drugs face capital punishment, making the country among the toughest regarding drug laws.

Possessing a military-grade weapon without proper documents is also illegal in Vietnam.
