In the first three months of the year, economy in Quang Ngai province remained stable increase; however several challenges occurred in the period.


The statement was made at the wide-range leaders meeting held on April 1st to review the provincial socio-economy situation in the January-to- March period and build up targeted plans for the upcoming months.


As reported, the significant increased sectors were industrial production, tax collection and fishing catch.


Particularly, the year-on-year increase of tax collection was 39.7 percent (pct), accounting for over 8.5 trillion VND (over 404 million USD) and fulfilling 33.9 pct of the year plan, of which Dung Quat Refinery contributed 7.5 trillion VND (over 357 million USD).


According to Director of Department Industry and Trade, industrial production the period was estimated at 6,5 trillion VND, a growth of 2.4 pct compared with last year’s figures.


However, Dung Quat Refinery’s production in the first quarter grew slower than previous years, a year-on-year decline of 0.71 pct.


Retail and services reached over 8.3 trillion VND, rising 12.7 pct compared with that in the same period of last year.


Quang Ngai saw a remarked achievement in im-export activities in the first quarter, with a turnover of nearly 108 million USD.


Regarding the sector of agro-forestry-fishery, there were several opposite numbers in production. In the period, the volume of fishing catches was positive with total of about 25 thousand tons, but rice production went down, a year on year drop of 1.2 pct, mainly because of the attack of last year natural disaster.


There was a significant point in the first three months of the year about the administrative innovation. There will be a new application of several directed documents issued by provincial people’s committee.


However, in the Jan. to Mar. period, Quang Ngai province saw several challenges such as the appearance of skin disease in Reu village, the consequences of last year historical flood leaving massive destruction on farming products and rural traffic systems, and the high risks of failure in tax collection as planned due to the upcoming two month switch off of Dung Quat Refinery for its agenda turnaround.

In a bid to reach the target set forth for the year, Chairman Cao Khoa in the meeting required his partners to focus on the missions in the next quarter, including: (i) to closely observe the production situation in provincial industrial zones, especially strengthen further supports and cooperation with BSR to complete the refinery’ turnaround soon; (ii) to meet with Ministries seeking large-scale projects to province, and kick off the project of national highway expansion schedule; (iii) to prepare well for the upcoming crop; (iv) to continually implement effectively project of new rural development and several national target programs about poverty reduction in the province; and (v) specially watch the situation of disease as well as implement effectively decontamination in disease areas.


The chairman also issued several directions about health, education, investment, fire control and prevention, targets to improve PCI – provincial competitiveness index, CPI – consumer price index- as well as PAPI – Provincial Governance and Public Administration Performance Index.
