Nhan Dan Online – A seminar providing information for Vietnamese enterprises on how to approach the European Union market took place on the morning of April 25 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Entitled ‘Supporting Vietnamese businesses in studying the distribution process and market demand of the EU market’, the event was jointly held by the European Market Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the European Trade Policy and Investment Support Project (MUTRAP).

Deputy Head of the European Market Department, Nguyen Duc Thuong said Vietnamese commodities exported to the EU largely depended on the foreign-invested sector and Vietnamese firms’ access to the EU market was still limited. Therefore, Vietnamese enterprises needed to undertake thorough research into the distribution process and market demand of the EU market to ensure appropriate approaches.

He added that such research would help raise the proportion of domestic enterprises exporting to the EU, particularly when the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) would be signed in the future.

At the event, delegates discussed the EU distribution system, goods importing channels, procedures and rules for goods imported into the EU market. They also exchanged ideas on the advantages and challenges for Vietnamese exporters when penetrating the EU market, and their recommendations for enterprises to have strategies to access and develop in the EU.

Chief Advisor of EU-MUTRAP, Claudio Dordi said the EU was a united market, with common standards and regulations for imported goods, however, each country had specific requirements for products that required enterprises to understand the needs of customers, to provide appropriate products and services.

The EU has always been an important trade partner of Vietnam, with positive trade growth despite the global economic recession. Since 2012, the EU has surpassed the US to become the largest export market and second-ranked trade partner of Vietnam.
