Vietnamese Gmail users may fall victim to a new phishing attack with scammers luring them into providing their Google IDs and passwords to a fake Google-like website to claim hi-tech devices, given away as prizes of an unreal promotional campaign.
A typical phishing email is titled “Hồ sơ giải thưởng từ sự kiện Gmail Gratitude 2014″ (Portfolio to garner prizes from the Gmail Gratitude 2014 event) and sent to a victim from the mail-noreply@gmailteams.com address under the name of “Gmail Team.”
The email tells its prey that he or she has been randomly chosen as one of 100 customers in Vietnam to win a prize from the Gmail Gratitude 2014, an “annual event to show gratitude to users of Google products around the world.”
The email requests the recipient to use the ID and password it has supplied to log in at vietnamese.eventsgmail.com, a phishing website.
After signing in with the ID and password, the user will be asked to log in on another website to see which prize he or she has won. But this time that person has to use the ID and password of his or her real Google account.
After this critical point, when users have put their Google account into the hands of the attackers, they will be redirected to a page which says they have won either a Google Nexus 7 or 10 tablet, or a Chromebook laptop.
Finally, they will be asked to settle delivery fees by bank transfer or prepaid mobile cards to receive the gift.
This is in fact just a new scam of hackers targeting Google users, according to Internet security experts. The trick is that scammers use website domains and email addresses that look like Google’s to dupe victims.
Those falling prey to the Vietnamese phishing scam will lose money by sending the serial number of the prepaid mobile card to “pay for gift delivery fees.”
In the worst scenario, their Google account will be stolen, experts have warned.
