Heritage preservation key to sustainable tourism

Heritage preservation was singled out as a key measure to develop sustainable tourism in central Quang Nam province at a conference on cultural preservation and tourism development.

At the event, held in Hanoi on September 24 by the Quang Nam People’s Committee and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, local and international delegates shared experience and put forward suggestions to help Quang Nam preserve and promote its heritage values for sustainable tourism.
Quang Nam, located in the south central coastal region , of Viet Nam, has two out of 21 world heritage – Hoi An ancient town and My Son sanctuary – recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
The world Biosphere Reserve Cu Lao Cham, also recognised by UNESCO, is another popular destination for tourists.
The heritage sites were preserved through the assistance of international experts and sponsorships totalling 79.5 billion VND (3,5 million USD) between 1997 and 2014 from organisations such as UNESCO, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Lerici Foundation (Italy) and American Express (the United States).
From 2009-2014, many tourism projects were implemented in the province and benefited local residents.
As a result, the number of visitors to the province increased from 300,000 in 1999 to more than 3.68 million in 2014.
However, Quang Nam is still facing major challenges, such as the funding required to preserve, manage and plan heritage sites; the development of tourism brands and products; and human resources quality.

(Cinet) – A project on Vietnam-US cooperation in contemporary dance, themed “Peace over War” will be carried out in Vietnam later this month, according to a press briefing held on September 22nd in Hanoi by the US’s Robin Becker Dance company and the UNESCO Centre for Culture and Sports Development.
Robin Becker Dance, a contemporary dance troupe from the US and Vietnam’s contempotary dance troupe will be performed in Hanoi on September 25, Ha Long city on September 27th and in Ho Chi Minh City on September 29th.
Two dance namely: “A group of individuals” by Vietnamese choreographer Le Vu Long will transport the audience back to the Vietnamese society of the 1970s. The work analyses each individual’s psychology at that time and demonstrates their complicated thoughts of being an independent individual or a united group; and “Into sunlight” by US choreographer Robin Becker tells stories of the pain left behind for the loved ones of both the survivors of the war and the deceased. The dance awakens the audience to the idea of not being driven into the severe whirl of war.
At the press briefing, the US choreographer shared that this first performance of the dance “Into sunlight” in Vietnam would be lucky chance for them to partly contribute to the healing of the pain caused by the war for both the Vietnamese and American people. “We hope to bring meaningful moments to our Vietnamese audience”, she said.
According to artist Le Vu Long, the shows coincide with the 20th anniversary of the normalisation of Vietnam-US diplomatic relations.
Furthermore, being an independent production, the artists made their project happen by their own doing, they were not just ‘booked’ to perform the show for the cause of the celebration, artist Long said.
The dance performances aim to share their thoughts on individuals affected by and the social issues resulting from Vietnam’s anti-US war, as well as its aftermath.

BAD GRIESBACH, Germany: Bernd Wiesberger and Benjamin Hebert produced matching seven under par 64s to share the first round lead in the European Open at the Bernhard Langer-designed Bad Griesbach Golf Resort on Thursday (Sep 24).
They are one shot clear of a group of four – Graeme Storm, Richard Bland, Richard Green and Darren Fichardt. German legend Langer is one of a large group only two shots off the lead on five under par. Austria’s Wiesberger and France’s Hebert made the most of benign conditions to card seven birdies apiece.
French Open winner Wiesberger had to hold his nerve as he birdied the last to join Hebert already safely in the clubhouse. “I felt really good coming into this week,” said the 29-year-old Wiesberger. “I played good golf last week and I dragged that into today as well.
“I hit the ball pretty good so few courses wouldn’t suit me right now. It’s not often you can say that but I felt in control of my ball flight and yardages. I had a few hiccups on the greens but you can’t have it all.”
Hebert, 28, put his encouraging start down to local knowledge. “I’ve played here two times already on the Challenge Tour and it is a good course. It was in great shape this afternoon and tomorrow (Friday) the greens will be perfect in the morning.
“It does help playing here before. I know the course well. I know where we can be more aggressive and where to play easier. It’s a good advantage.”

HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam’s Nguyen Tien Minh yesterday grabbed a berth in the semi-finals of the Sydney International badminton tournament in Australia.
Minh defeated No 7 seed Luis Ramon Garrido of Mexico 21-12, 21-12 in the 40-minute quarter-final match.
Minh, a No 2 seed, will next meet No 14 Zulhelmi Zulkiffli of Malaysia who won 21-15, 21-11 over Yu Jen Chi of Chinese Taipei in an earlier match.
Minh is the only Vietnamese at the tournament after his female teammate Nguyen Thuy Lonh lost 12-21, 14-21 to Thai Pornpawee Chochuwong, No 4 seed, at the quarter-final round yesterday.
The event will close on Saturday. — VNS

FLC cup to be held at Sam Son

THANH HOA (VNS) — The FLC Tennis Cup 2015 will be held at FLC Sam Son Beach and Golf Resort in Thanh Hoa from tomorrow until Sunday.
Many top Vietnamese tennis players, including Pham Minh Tuan and Trinh Linh Giang, who played in the final of this year’s Viet Nam Men’s Tennis Championships in the men’s singles category, will attend the event.
The match between Tuan and Do Minh Quan, who has been champion 10 times and has just come back from the United States, will be held on a tennis court floating on the surface of a 5,000 square metre pool .
Other Vietnamese tennis players, including Hoang Thanh Trung, Tran Hoang Anh Khoa, Nguyen Dac Tien and Hiroki Horikiri, a guest player from Japan, will also compete for first prize worth VND30 million (US$1,340) and second prize of VND20 million ($890).
The FLC Tennis Cup is jointly organised by the FLC Group and Sport and Culture newspaper. — VNS

(Cinet)- The Organization Board of “Bui Xuan Phai – Love for Hanoi 2015″ awards organized and honoured some awards 2015 on September 23.
Born in 1927, researcher Giang Quan is regarded as a living encyclopaedia on Hanoi. He is a familiar figure among Hanoians for engaging in the city’s traditional art and culture activities for over half a century. At the age of nearly 90, Quan continues to write books on Hanoi and record his memories of the capital. His favourite book is about festival customs around Hanoi, which will be available for readers in the near future.
His most popular pieces include ‘Kham Thien guong mat cuoc doi’ (Kham Thien – the face of life); ‘Tro choi tro dien dan gian vung Ha Noi’ (Hanoi’s folk games); ‘Tu dien duong pho Ha Noi’ (Dictionary on Hanoi streets); ‘Ha Noi trong ca dao ngan ngu’ (Hanoi in folk verses and proverbs); ‘Ky su dia chi Ha Noi’ (Hanoi monographic chronicle); ‘Van hoa gia dinh Ha Noi’ (Hanoi’s family culture); ‘Thang Long Ha Noi nghin nam truyen thong va thanh lich’ (Thousand-year traditional, elegant Thang Long Hanoi).
Poet Bang Viet, head of the award jury, said Quan boasts a profound knowledge of the capital, noting that he has written over 30 books about Hanoi’s land and people over the past 70 years.
The Idea Prize was granted to the research project on restoring the Kinh Thien temple at the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long conducted by the Thang Long-Hanoi Heritage Conservation Centre.
The Job Prize went to the Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) and the Hanoi municipal People’s Committee for establishing the Hanoi study and development centre to carry out scientific research and human resources activities for the capital.
Besides the main award, the Job Prize, Work Prize and Idea Prize were also presented.
As known, the annual awards were launched in 2008 by the Vietnam News Agency’s The ‘Thao&Van Hoa’ (Sports and Culture) newspaper. The awards are named after the famous painter Bui Xuan Phai (1920-88) in honour of his career and aims to continue spreading his love for Hanoi.
The Bui Xuan Phai awards are well respected and honour the contributions of individuals and organisations to society, culture and the arts in Hanoi.
