HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam’s Nguyen Tien Minh yesterday grabbed a berth in the semi-finals of the Sydney International badminton tournament in Australia.

Minh defeated No 7 seed Luis Ramon Garrido of Mexico 21-12, 21-12 in the 40-minute quarter-final match.

Minh, a No 2 seed, will next meet No 14 Zulhelmi Zulkiffli of Malaysia who won 21-15, 21-11 over Yu Jen Chi of Chinese Taipei in an earlier match.

Minh is the only Vietnamese at the tournament after his female teammate Nguyen Thuy Lonh lost 12-21, 14-21 to Thai Pornpawee Chochuwong, No 4 seed, at the quarter-final round yesterday.

The event will close on Saturday. — VNS
