The list is based on Backpacker Index by Price of Travel – the world’s largest database of travel costs.
Vietnam’s capital city comes out on top of the list, with backpackers spending just USD 18.29 a day in Hanoi, followed by Ho Chi Minh City at USD 19.47.

The ancient town of Hoi An in Quang Nam province ranks eighth on the list at a daily budget of USD 21.2.
Price of Travel ranked 137 major cities in the world based on the minimum amount of money that travelers would need to spend a night in the cheapest bunk bed, two public transport rides, entrance fee to one of the local top attractions, three simple meals and a beer.
The rest of top 10 are Vientiane in Laos (USD 19.56), Myanmar’s Yangon (USD 19.83), Pokhara in Nepal (USD 20.32), Thailand’s Chiang Mai (USD 20.69), Granada in Nicaragua (USD 20.77), Quito in Ecuador (USD 21.90), and Phnom Penh in Cambodia (USD 22.23).
The most expensive cities in the world are New York, Venice and Zurich.
