Tourism industry gearing to reach targets

In the first nine months of 2017, Vietnam hosted more than 9.4 million foreign visitors and served 57.9 million domestic visitors (up 28.4 and 10 percent plus from the same time last year), earning total revenues of VND376 trillion (up 25 percent plus).

The target appears feasible, as the number of foreign visitors usually increases from October to March and the number of visitors from China and Europe keeps growing. The hosting of the 2017 activities of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, including a summit of 21 heads of state in November, is also expected to be leveraged into additional opportunities for tourism development.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Nguyen Ngoc Thien, has urged the tourism industry to immediately develop and implement specific, feasible solutions to reach the growth target, including attracting additional visitors from nearby, potential markets such as China, the Republic of Korea (RoK), Japan, ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations), and Russia. He also told industry sector managers to keep eye on changes in source markets and in Vietnam to address problems, and take advantage of the 2017 APEC Summit to promote Vietnam’s image.

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) said that in the last two months of this year, VNAT would continue strengthening tourism promotion in such big markets as China and India. It will also enable Vietnamese travel businesses to attend world-leading fairs, including the ITB Asia (from October 25-27 in Singapore) and the WTM (from November 6-10 in London). The VNAT said it would welcome eight FAM delegations from key markets, coming to survey Vietnam’s tourism opportunities before the end of the year.

The VNAT has drawn up tourism promotion plans for 2018, including participation in major international fairs (Travex in January in Thailand, ITB in March in Berlin, Germany, MITT in March in Moscow, Russia, Top Resa in September in Paris, France, and WTM in November in London). It also plans to welcome about 10 FAM delegations from China, Japan, Western Europe, Russia, North America, Australia, and the RoK. Other activities will include Vietnamese culture weeks abroad and electronic marketing, and tourism promotion through mass media.
