The train was carrying 226 passengers, including several foreign travelers. Some of the passengers suffered minor injuries and were treated at the nearby Chan May Hospital.

At the scene of the accident, about 150 kilometers of railroad was distorted, with competent authorities exerting all efforts to fix it and to crane the damaged passenger cars out of the area.

The work was carried out overnight and was completed by Tuesday morning, allowing the resumption of normal railroad operations.

Truong Hoa Binh, deputy prime minister and chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety, has requested local authorities to investigatre the cause of the accident and penalize those responsible.

According to Vu Thanh Minh, captain of the SE2 train, he was aware that the train was reaching an intersection and had pulled the train’s whistle to signal to any incoming vehicles.

Minh used the emergency break as soon as he spotted the tipper truck but was unable to avoid the collision.

Speaking with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, Nguyen Van Phuong, vice-chairman of the Thua Thien-Hue People’s Committee, assessed that the crash was caused by the truck driver’s carelessness.
