Nearly half of ABTC-holders receiving permission to enter Vietnam were from Australia. The remainders were citizens of New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and other countries.
The department released their ABTC statistics on the second day of the APEC Business Mobility Group meeting, one of a series of conferences relating to the APEC Senior Officials Meeting III organised in Da Nang.
The Vietnamese Government has sped up the issue of ABTC recently to make entry procedures more efficient and fast.
ABTC holders are eligible for exemption from visa and resident registration procedures. They can use express immigration lanes at airports and stay for a maximum of 60 days for each visit.
The ABTC is available for a period of three years and cannot be extended.
In 1996, Australia launched the ABTC programme. One year later, the programme spread to the Republic of Korea and the Philippines. By 2005, 17 out of 21 APEC economies were participating in the programme.
