Diverse activities mark 31st anniversary of Southern Liberation

The exhibition on national achievements after 20 years of the Doi Moi (Renewal) process, the screening of a series of films on the past resistance wars, and the publishing of books have helped municipal people, particularly youth, understand more about the country’s development and enhance their responsibility in the cause of national construction and defence.

On the occasion, Saigon Travel Company (Saigontourist) welcomed 4,700 foreign visitors to Vietnam. Many entertainment centres such as Dam Sen and Suoi Tien also organised interesting programmes to attract visitors.

*** The same day, more than 5,000 officers, workers and people in the southern-most province of Ca Mau gathered at the Hung Vuong Cultural Centre to mark the 31st anniversary of Southern Liberation Day and the 7th founding anniversary of Ca Mau city.

*** Meanwhile, localities across the country and overseas Vietnamese communities have held diverse activities to mark the 31st anniversary of Southern Liberation and National Reunification, the 116th birth anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh and the success of the recent 10th National Party Congress.

A special art programme was held in front of the Thong Nhat (Reunification) palace in Ho Chi Minh City on April 28, featuring the images of Liberation Army men and heroic Vietnamese mothers during the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign, culminating in the total victory on April 30, 1975.

The programme also included exchanges between generations of war veterans and youths recalling the seething atmosphere of Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) in April 31 years ago.

The same day, a meeting was held in the southern province of Binh Duong to mark the event. During the past 31 years, Vietnamese, Hoa (Chinese) and Khmer ethnic people in Soc Trang have united to build a new life and gained many important achievements.

The anniversary was also held in the southern provinces of Binh Duong and An Giang.

Truong Sa island district of central Khanh Hoa province celebrated its 31st liberation day on April 29. Over the past years, local people and soldiers on the islands have spared no effort to defend national sovereignty and develop the local economy. To date, all the islands have gained access to electricity and local islanders’ living conditions have improved significantly.

On April 29, Viet Phuc Medical Ltd. Co. provided free medial healthcare services for former young vanguards in several communes and wards in Hanoi. The ex-soldiers received gifts including medicines and tonics worth VND40,000 each.

Overseas Vietnamese in Cambodia marks the anniversary

Vietnamese people gathered in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on April 27 to mark the 31st anniversary of Southern Vietnam Liberation Day.

April 30, 1975 was a great landmark in Vietnam’s history, reminiscent of the people’s glorious victory against US aggressors for national reunification, said Chau Van Chi, President of the Vietnamese People Association in Cambodia (VPAC).

Overseas Vietnamese in Cambodia asserted their determination to further contribute to building their native homeland into a prosperous country, Mr Chi said.

The gathering was also an event to celebrate the success of the 10th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam and prepare for the 116th birth anniversary of late President Ho Chi Minh (May 19, 1890-May 19, 2006).

On the occasion, the VPAC launched a campaign dubbed “Live and follow the example of Great Uncle Ho” to welcome the National Day (September 2). The campaign will include such activities as raising funds for the poor and building schools teaching Vietnamese and Khmer languages for children.
