Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday morning closed a runway which was struck by lightning, forcing many carriers to reschedule their flights.
Managers at the airport said the incident left a hole around 60 centimeters wide on the runway. It will be closed until at least 5 a.m. Thursday to fix the damage. The airport’s capacity was reduced by 40 percent.
Tan Son Nhat, which is receiving between 650-750 flights a day, will give priority of the other runway to international flights.
Domestic flights coming to the airport are recommended to start later than scheduled and have more fuel in case they have to fly around to wait for landing.
Carriers said they have not known the exact impacts. But a source from budget carrier Vietjet said at least 100 flights are affected. The number with Vietnam Airlines could be higher.
The same runway was closed in July last year also due to lightning strikes.
Passengers will not be compensated for flight delays or cancellations due to natural reasons, according to Vietnam’s aviation rules.
