US President Barack Obama, who is in Hanoi for an official visit, on Monday had dinner with CNN’s Anthony Bourdain at a bun cha restaurant in the Vietnamese capital.
Obama had two portions of bun cha or grilled pork meat served with rice vermicelli, fresh herbs and processed fish sauce before ordering four portions to take home, said Nguyen Thi Hang Nga, owner of Bun cha Huong Lien restaurant.
This dish is a Hanoi speciality and beloved by many foreign tourists.
Obama and Bourdain met at the restaurant for an interview over Vietnamese beer and bun cha. Their conversation is set to be featured in an episode of Bourdain’s travel and food show on CNN, “Parts Unknown,” in September.
“Bourdain will explore the purpose of the President’s trip and his interest in the people, food and culture of Vietnam,” a CNN spokesperson said.
“Total cost of bun cha dinner with the President: $6.00. I picked up the check,” Bourdain tweets.
“The President’s chopstick skills are on point,” he comments on Instagram.
Hundreds of people gathered on the streets outside the restaurant as they tried to catch a glimpse of Obama.
After having dinner, the US president spent around five minutes to meet and shake hands with locals before leaving.
