HCM CITY (VNS) — Ethnic singer Y Jang Tuyn, a music idol among Vietnamese youth, has released his fifth album showcasing his new style of funk rock.
On his CD, Mot Tuan Bay Ngay (Seven Days a Week), the Dak Lak-based singer shows his strong voice with no high-tech recording.
The work includes a music video and features eight songs in funk rock that he wrote.
“I find that funk rock is similar to my Tay Nguyen music. Ethnic minority music is like a river that runs in my soul,” he said.
His album’s featured songs are Ngay Thu Nam Vang Em (Thursday without You) and Mot Tuan Bay Ngay.
While Ngay Thu Nam Vang Em is in praise of love, Mot Tuan Bay Ngay says that music has the power to make people come together and enjoy life.
The simply dressed Tuyn isn’t as fashionable as his peers, such as pop idols Bao Anh and Noo Phuoc Thinh, but he is more popular.
Last year, he organised two live shows in his native city, Pleiku, and was chosen to work as a content editor for the Voice of HCM City’s People.
“I’ve travelled to many places around the country,” says the 37-year- old.
“But I just enjoy using my voice while singing in my homeland, the Tay Nguyen (Central Highlands).”
Tuyn drove his fans wild when he first appeared at the 2003 HCM City Television Singing Contest, competing with many participants to win the Best Performance Singer prize.
Like his late father, People’s Artist Y Moan, he brings “a few ethnic instruments and clothes to stage”.
“All I have is my love for music,” said Tuyn, adding that although he moved to develop his career in HCM City, but his voice is just stronger and more powerful when he breathes, eats and drinks in the highlands.
As a boy, Tuyn liked to sing folk songs of his Banar people. His father encouraged his love for singing.
He is famous for pop and rock songs written by well-known musicians Nguyen Cuong, Tran Tien and E De minority composer Y Phon K’Sor, including Ly Ca Phe Ban Me (A Cup of Ban Me Coffee) and Nhip Chieng Buon K’siar (K’siar Village’s Gong Rhythm).
“Tuyn’s music brings to mind highland scenes of Tay Nguyen boy and girls, big trees, springs and mountains. I can see he sings with his soul, blood and passion,” said Luu Thi Gia Nghi, a fan of HCM City. — VNS
