MobiFone is set to launch its 4G services next month, following similar moves by two other major wireless carriers, local media reported Friday.
The company, the second biggest mobile operator in terms of subscribers, will first launch the high-speed services in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, news website VnEconomy reported on Friday, citing a company representative.
Like its rivals, MobiFone, run by the Ministry of Information and Communication, will have to run 4G services on a one-year trial basis before applying for nationwide licenses.
Military-run Viettel, which accounted for nearly 47 percent of the market with over 120.3 million subscribers at the end of last year, launched 4G services in the southern beach town of Vung Tau in December.
The third biggest carrier VinaPhone, operated by state-owned Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group, has been running its own services in the Mekong Delta Province of Kien Giang’s Phu Quoc Island and part of Ho Chi Minh City since January.
The three telecommunication giants are controlling 99 percent the 3G market, which had more than 35.7 million subscribers as of January.
