VN earns one record, more golds from APG

HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam grabbed six more gold medals at the ongoing ASEAN Para Games (APG) in Singapore on December 8.

Swimmer Vo Thanh Tung was the best athlete of the day, winning a title and a Games record.

Tung finished first in the men’s 50m backstroke S5 with a time of 41.26sec, setting a new record for the category, which was previously owned by Malaysian Zul Amirul Sidi Bin Abdullah since the Kuala Lumpur event in 2009.

Abdullah came second, followed by another Vietnamese, Nguyen Thanh Trung.

It was Tung’s fourth gold medal at this year’s APG.

Earlier, he took the top places in the 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 200m individual medley – SM6 and 4x50m medley relay. He also won two silvers in the 20m freestyle and 50m butterfly events.

Chess masters pocketed their fifth gold, with a crown going to the women’s team in the rapid B2/B3 pool.

The chess team earlier pocketed four silver and three bronze medals.

Track-and-field athletes bagged the remaining four golds.

Nguyen Be Hau triumphed in the men’s shot put – F56/57 class, with a result of 10.21m.

It was his second medal in Singapore, following a bronze in the discus throw on December 7.

Later, Ngo Xuan Doan claimed his first title in the men’s high jump F42/44, with a jump of 1.67m, leaving Myanmar’s Soe Than and the Philippines’ Andy Ramirez Avellana in the next two spots.

Runner Phung Dinh Tu came first in the men’s 200m T45/46.

Tu took 23.72sec to cross the finish line, leaving Ahmad Solihim Bin Mohd Nor of Malaysia and Mai Anh Minh of Viet Nam far behind.

Tu was also the winner of the 100m category on December 6.

The last gold went to Nguyen Hoang Minh in the men’s 1,500m T12 final, with a time of 5:18.57. His teammate Nguyen Van Binh took a silver, with 5:19.22.

The eighth APG will conclude tonight with a jubilant performance of music and dance at the Marina Bay Sands.

The responsibilities associated with hosting the APG will then be officially handed over to Malaysia for the 2017 APG. A Malaysia segment performance will be organised for the finale. — VNS
