While Vietnam is trying to attract foreign travellers after a long sharp fall in visitor numbers, more local people are rushing abroad to experience new countries.

According to statistics from the South Korean Tourism General Department, in the first 11 months of 2015, South Korea welcomed 151,100 Vietnamese tourists and the figure is expected to reach 170,000 this year.

Over the past three years, Japan has also seen the annual growth of 50% in the number of Vietnamese travellers.

Phan Xuan Anh, an adviser of Tan Hong Travel Company, said that most of travel companies in HCM City sell outbound tours as it is much easier for them to organise overseas tours for Vietnamese people than to arrange tours for foreigners to Vietnam. The majority of travel companies in HCM City that actually cater for inbound tours are foreign-invested.

Travel companies in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand have been eyeing the Vietnamese market. They have sent their tour guides to Vietnam to learn Vietnamese and gain more insight into Vietnamese culture and cuisine.

A representative from a Cambodian travel company said his company serves Vietnamese visitors, so they also try to ensure Vietnamese food is on their menu.

Some Singaporean travel companies have staff members who specialise in serving different nationalities. Vietnamese people can receive advice in Vietnamese when they come to Singapore for medical checks-up as well. Meanwhile, many tourists from the Mekong Delta region have visited Malaysia and Thailand to join agricultural tours to learn experiences.

For the South Korean market, Vietnamese travel companies often hold tours for local tourists to destinations made famous by South Korean films.

According to a representative from Saigontourist, the company expects to see 15% annual growth in outbound tourism, with Japan and South Korea rates up by up to 30%.
