Ho Chi Minh City government has ordered the installation of air-conditioners and music players at public toilets in Ben Thanh Market in an attempt to better serve tourists.
The city also ordered a state-owned company in charge of providing public services to install notice boards written in both Vietnamese and English in the toilets. It is unclear what they will write on the boards.
All the work must be completed before October 1, it said.
Ben Thanh Market, built in early 20th century, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city.
According to the District 1 Public Services Company, around 11,000 people use public toilets in the market each day, with around VND9 million (US$402) of fees collected.
Public urination is quite common as there is a fundamental lack of public toilets on Ho Chi Minh City streets.
There are more than 200 public toilets in the city, many of which fail to meet required hygiene standards.
