Authorities in the southern beach town Vung Tau suspended the business license of a restaurant on Tuesday after a tourist reported on Facebook that she was ripped off.
The restaurant gave the customer a bill of VND400,000 (US$18) for 15 beer cans, while the customer only had five, according to the complaint.
The tourist said she was overcharged for several other food items.
Nguyen Thi Dung, the restaurant owner, said she had already returned the extra money to the tourist right after the customer complained about the large bill.
But local officials said there’s no evidence of that.
The tourist said the restaurant never admitted to any mistake and only agreed to give her a 10 percent discount at the end.
One official in the inspection team said they will propose a fine of VND5 million.
The restaurant opened early this year. It’s not clear how long it will be closed for the violation.
Inspectors said the restaurant did not list the prices for many seafood items.
Truong Thi Huong, vice chairwoman of the tourist city, said it will add the restaurant into a blacklist that tourists should be watch out for.
Vung Tau authorities started their crackdown on overcharging restaurants a couple of years ago.
They shut down a restaurant last February for charging a Japanese tourist VND22 million (over US$1,000), around ten times the actual bill.
The city publicized a blacklist in 2011. It has not released an updated version since.
