An ASEAN traditional music fest has kicked off in Vietnam and been attended by artists from eight regional countries.
The event opened in Thanh Hoa Province on August 1 and will conclude on August 6.
The festival welcomes guests from South Korea in addition to more than 100 artists from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar and Vietnam.
Jointly organized by the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Thanh Hoa People’s Committee, the fest honors valuable musical features of regional countries and enhances mutual understanding among their peoples.
According to the organizers, Vietnam has so far organized many cultural, sporting, and tourism events with the goal of strengthening the relationship between ten ASEAN countries and prepare for the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community this year.
A seminar on the diversity of ASEAN traditional music will also take place as part of the ongoing festival, the ministry said Monday on its website.
ASEAN was established on August 8, 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, according to the bloc’s website.
The subsequent entry of Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia, from 1984 to 1999, made up what is a ten-member ASEAN grouping today.
Vietnam joined ASEAN in July 1995.
