By statistic of the Department of Library under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, just around 564,133 residents across the country registered to regularly borrow books from public libraries, said Ms Vu Duong Thuy Nga, deputy head of the Department of Library at a seminar on the project “Developing reading culture in the community for the period 2015-2020 with the vision toward 2030″ on July 28 in Hanoi.

The number means that around 0,057 per cent of the country’s population borrow books from public libraries, Ms. Nga said.

The figure is so alarming, Ms. Nga added.

She explained that because public libraries in district and communes work so badly that they can not attract readers and reading culture has not been much paid attention recently.

Ms. Nga said that while employees of the Department of Library toured around airports, bus stations or public places, they realized that most people from adults to children played with Ipad, mobile phones or laptop rather than newspaper or book like before.

Despite of how much spacious libraries are, they just receive very a few readers. For instance, it is now summer vacation, but just ten readers have seen in Hanoi public library everyday. Libraries play faded role nowadays.

Out of 600 public libraries across the country, only 30 libraries have its headquarter while the remaining are located in culture houses.

As per the project on developing reading culture in the community for the period 2015-2020 that is aimed at enhancing the role of libraries through media, 95 percent of libraries in provinces have its own headquarters and 30 percent of communes have libraries.
