PANO – The outstanding performances by Vietnamese military athletes at the 28th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 28) on June 9th left deep impressions on the international, regional and domestic sports-loving fans.
Accordingly, runner Nguyen Van Lai, from the Military Sports and Physical Training Centre under the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, finished first in the men’s 5,000m event after 14 minutes 4.82 seconds to pocket a gold medal and even break the record of 14 minutes 8.97 seconds set by Malaysian athlete Ramachandran Murusamy in the 1993 SEA Games.
After the success of Lai, Vietnam’s “Iron Girl” Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, from the Defence Sports and Physical Training Centre 4 of the VPA’s Military Zone 9, continued her impressive performance at the Games with golds and records in 200m freestyle and 200m butterfly categories.
The 18-year-old swimmer has so far broken seven SEA Games records and contributed six golds to Vietnam’s tally at this year’s event.
