The Vietnamese national U-23 football (soccer) team yesterday crushed Timor-Leste 4-0 in an easy Group B match at the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and grabbed an early ticket to the semifinals with one more match in hand.
Since they were not hurried to push a high formation to seek goals as in previous games, the Vietnamese players staged the encounter in a patient and alert manner but still created numerous chances.
Despite missing some chances in the first half, they still managed to score a goal in the 11th minute and three more goals in the second half thanks to the weak defense of their opponents.
Another notable detail is that this was the fourth consecutive game in which coach Toshiya Miura had changed the starting line-up. Each match has had four to five positions changed.
The four goals were not really due to the talent of the winners, but they were ‘contributed’ by the errors of the weak rivals.
Vietnam had eight chances in the first half to shoot toward the rival woodwork but converted only one of them, a goal by midfielder Phi Son.
The Vietnamese only started pushing the rhythm of the match in the second half, forcing the defensive line of Timor-Leste into more mistakes.
Striker Mac Hong Quan doubled the advantage to 2-0 in the 50th minute before playmaker Ngoc Hai brought it to 3-0 and Huy Toan fixed the result at 4-0 in the middle of the second half.
With four wins each, Vietnam and Thailand won the two tickets to the semifinals.
Vietnam stand atop Group B thanks to their better goal difference than Thailand, 16/1 compared to 13/0, respectively.
The Vietnamese and Thais will play their last match in Group B on June 10 to decide their ranking.
Coach Miura said after the match that he is confident in the target to lead Vietnam to the final match of the SEA Games.
“Now, we are ready to play in the round of the last four teams and this achievement is partly thanks to our fans who have supported us,” he said.
The 28th SEA Games will last till June 16 in Singapore.
