SEA Games: Vietnamese runners break 24-year-old record

Vietnamese runners won a gold medal in women’s 4x400m relay at the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Singapore on Thursday as Vietnam maintains its 2nd place on the medals table after bagging nine more gold medals.

Nguyen Thi Oanh, Nguyen Thi Thuy, Quach Thi Lan and Nguyen Thi Huyen finished with 3m31s45, breaking a record of 3m35s53 set by Thailand in 1991.

Thailand finished second with 3m36s82, followed by Malaysia with 3m39s10.

Meanwhile, Duong Van Thai won a gold medal in men’s 1500m with 3m47s04, the best record he ever set.

Another gold medal in athletics was bagged by Do Thi Thao in women’s 1500m with 4m28s39, followed by another Vietnamese runner Nguyen Thi Phuong, who won the silver medal in the competition.

Also on Thursday, the 6th day of SEA Games and last day for swimming, swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien bagged a gold medal in women’s 200m breaststroke to complete her stunning collection of 8 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze at this event.

The 19-year-old swimmer of the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho finished with 2m31s16, closely followed by Thailand’s Pawapotako Phiangkhwan by just 0s32 behind. Singapore’s Yeo Samantha Louisa Ginn finished third with 2m35s60.

Vietnamese athletes bagged a total of nine gold medals on Thursday, with other medals claimed by Hoang Xuan Vinh in 50m pistol men’s individual and four more in canoeing.

By the end of Thursday, Vietnam ranked second on the medals table with 57 golds, 31 silvers and 50 bronzes, after host Singapore with 65 golds, 58 silvers and 68 bronzes.
