Nation to celebrate poet Nguyen Du’s 250th birth anniversary

Many cultural activities will be organised nationwide in November to celebrate the 250th birth anniversary of eminent poet Nguyen Du.

Bui Duc Hanh, director of the Ha Tinh Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism on Tuesday said the central province, where the poet was born, will work with relevant agencies to organise seminars and contests, distribute publications about Nguyen Du, as well as his magnum opus, The Tale of Kieu.

The Nguyen Du Culture and Tourism Week will be held in Ha Tinh Province and several other locations in the country.

Documentaries will be made on the poet’s life, career and family, he said

Several international researchers and authors will attend the seminars and other events.

“It’s an occasion to praise the poet’s talent and devotion to Vietnamese and world culture,” Hanh said.

“This year, the celebration will be organised at the national level to honour and promote Vietnamese culture and literature,” he said.

Du (1765-1820) was recognised as a world famous personality by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at its 37th General Assembly in Paris in 2013.

In 1965, he was honoured as a world cultural celebrity by the World Peace Council, occasioned by his 200th birthday.

He left behind several valuable works, including The Tale of Kieu, the tragic tale of a woman of great beauty and talent.

The masterpiece has been translated into more than 20 languages.
