Vietnamese soccer fans are let down once again after the nation’s men’s team suffered a shocking defeat 2-1 in the semi-final match against Myanmar at the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Singapore on Saturday.
The Vietnamese team created more opportunities, dominated possession and field position throughout the game at the National Stadium. However, the team “missed too many opportunities,” Vietnam’s Japanese coach Toshiya Miura said after the game.
“It wasn’t about [bad] luck, it had to do with our strikers’ capacity,” he said
However, Myanmar took the lead in the 39th minute via penalty after Ngoc Thang was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area as he attempted to block a free kick.
Myanmar 19-year-old striker Aung Sithu successfully defeated Vietnam’s goalkeeper Phi Minh Long to score his fifth goal of the Games, which helps him lead the top scorers table.
In the 72nd minute, Huy Toan equilized for Vietnam by tapping in from close range after Myanmar goalkeeper Phyo Kyaw Zin had initially palmed away Cong Phuong’s shot.
However, Captain Nay Tin Lun scored the winner for Myanmar in the 79th minute after his right-foot strike deflected off the knee of Vietnam’s defender Thanh Hien and inside the net.
On June 15, Myanmar will compete for gold medal against the winner between defending gold medalist Thailand, a 14-time champion, and Indonesia.
The losing side in that game will play Vietnam in a third-place play-off match on the same day.
