2015 SEA Games: Vietnam wins more golds in gymnastics, wushu

Vietnam secured its second place on the third day of the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on Monday, with five more gold medals in artistic gymnastics and wushu.

In artistic gymnastics, Phan Thi Ha Thanh and Dinh Phuong Thanh won two gold medals in women’s and men’s individual all-round competitions, despite their injuries ahead of the event.

Thanh, a 23-year-old athlete from the northern province of Hai Phong, also suffered pressure after her unsuccessful performance on Sunday due to a knee injury, which resulted in Vietnam placing 4th in the group category.

“She even had abdominal pain an hour ahead of her individual performance. But she overcame it and won the gold medal,” said her coach Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy.

Thanh finished 1st with a total of 53.650 points, followed by Malaysia’s Abdul Hadi with 51.850 points.

Meanwhile, the gold medal for Dinh Phuong Thanh was considered a surprise.

The 20-year-old Hanoi native finished with 86.150 points, followed by Pham Phuoc Hung, also from Vietnam, with 85.250. Hung, 24, made a mistake on pommel horse.

Also on Monday, Vietnam won two gold medals in wushu, including one by Nguyen Van Tai in the men’s sanda 65kg competition and the other by Duong Thuy Vi in women’s optional strait sword.

Vietnam is expected to win more golds on Tuesday in athletics, gymnastics and swimming.

By the end of Monday, Vietnam maintained its second place in the overall scoreboard with 26 golds, 12 silvers and 30 bronzes. Singapore still led with 40 golds.
