The Vietnamese national U-23 football team routed Brunei 6-0 in their opener in group B of the men’s football at the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games to officially take place in Singapore from June 5-16.
Midfielder Thanh Binh opened the scoring in the 25th minute after a cross from the right side by midfielder Ngoc Thang.
Vietnam staged in an attacking formation from the start of the match in hope of finding an emphatic win over the underdog Brunei of group B.
In the second half, Vietnam continued to pile up more pressure and it result in five other goals by midfielders Phi Son, Mac Hong Quan, Duc Huy, Cong Phuong, and Manh Hung.
The game was generally the performance of Vietnamese midfielders and strikers, who took home five out of the six goals. Manh Hung was the only defender sealing the win at 6-0 with his last goal.
Striker Cong Phuong, who fielded in the match in the second half to replace Huy Hung, missed a penalty in the 62nd minute. He well cheated Brunei goalkeeper Mohd H.J. Mohd but sent the ball to hit the cross bar.
This marks the fourth consecutive win for Vietnam in all four encounters with Brunei at SEA Games.
Vietnam is in Group B with Timor-Leste, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand and Brunei. Other regional teams including hosts Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia and the Philippines are in group A.
The 28th SEA Games will open in Singapore on June 5 and close on June 16.
