A man was shot dead during a police raid on a cockfighting ring in Ca Mau Province on Saturday.
Pham Thanh Sy, deputy police chief of the southern province, confirmed on Monday that Major Lu Phu Sinh “inadvertently” fired his gun and killed Le Hoai Bao.
Sy said an investigation into the incident has been started.
From initial information, Sinh allegedly fired two warning shots which caused the gamblers to flee.
Then he chased after Bao with the gun in his hand. Bao tried to escaped and was shot by accident, Sy claimed.
It’s not clear whether Bao was betting for the game or just watching.
A source from the police said Sinh can face manslaughter charges.
Family of the 30-year-old victim said some officers have visited them and left an envelope of VND30 million (US$1,390) to help with the funeral.
Nguyen Thi Tuyet, Bao’s aunt, told Tuoi Tre newspaper she ran out of the house after hearing gun shots.
“I saw Bao lying face down on the ground. I could not lift him up. We took him to hospital but he died on the way.”
Police have arrested 12 gambling suspects.
