Competent agencies of Vietnam and China are working together to handle a serious traffic accident that killed three Vietnamese people and injured over a dozen more people in a road accident in China.
The accident happened in Hekou District of Yunnan Province in southern China at 10:30 am on Monday, leaving three Vietnamese women dead, including Tan Pa May, 55; Tan Lo May, 36; and Ly Ta May, 29, all from Den Sang Commune, Bat Xat District of Lao Cai Province in northern Vietnam, said Tran Dai Hai, director of the provincial Department of Foreign Affairs.
By Wednesday evening, authorities of both Vietnam and China had completed all compulsory procedures to send the bodies of the three victims back to their home province for burial, Hai said.
The Chinese side has offered 34,000 Chinese yuan (US$5,480) to each family of the three, he added.
The accident also injured 18 other Vietnamese people, 13 of whom are being treated in hospitals in China.
The foreign affairs department is coordinating with Chinese authorities in treating the injured, Hai said.
Hoang Dang Khoa, chairman of Bat Xat, said the district is closely cooperating with Chinese authorities to take care of these victims, under the instructions of Le Ngoc Hung, chairman of the Lao Cai People’s Committee.
Among the 18 injured people, five suffered slight wounds and were discharged on Wednesday morning, Khoa said.
By 2:00 pm the same day, the remaining 15 victims, with more serious conditions, remained in treatment in major hospitals in Hekou, he added.
Representatives of Bat Xat District authorities visited and gave financial support to the families of all the victims of the accident.
The district government has also worked with the Chinese side to arrange for relatives of the injured to visit Hekou to take care of them.

The two others were reported to be safe and sound.
