UN gender equality movement launches in Vietnam

NDO – HeForShe Campaign, a global solidarity movement for gender equality was launched by UN Women in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union in Vietnam on March 6 in commemoration of International Women’s Day 2015.

Initiated by UN Women, HeForShe is a global effort that aims to engage men and boys, one half of the world’s population, in removing the social and cultural barriers that prevent the other half of the population from achieving their potential.

Speaking at the launch, UN Resident Co-ordinator in Vietnam, Pratibah Mehta highlighted that gender equality is not and must not only be a women’s issues but a human rights issue that requires every man and boy to take action against all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls.

UN Women Country Representative, Shoko Ishikawa stressed that boys and girls are not born with gender-stereotyped behaviour. It’s not a physical difference — it’s learned. HeForShe aims to rebuild the relationship between men and women to make it equal and benefit both men and women, she added.

At the event, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and President of Viet Nam Youth Federation, Nguyen Phi Long stressed the importance of women in the community. He also expressed his support to HeForShe and called on men and boys in Vietnam to speak out and take action to create an equal society for both men and women.

Inspired by the HeForShe spirit, hundreds of Vietnamese — including the Government’s male leaders, businessmen, public figures, and ordinary men and boys — showed their support for the campaign at the launch.

Many famous Vietnamese actors, singers and writers including Tran Thu Ha, Hoang Bach, Xuan Bac, Chieu Xuan, Van Mai Huong, and Trang Ha raised their voice to encourage their fans and all of society to join the campaign’s activities which will last until Vietnam’s Women Day on October 20.

HeForShe was first launched at the UN on September 20, 2014, calling on men to stand up and support gender equality. Since then, several Heads of State and hundreds of thousands of men from 196 countries around the world have committed to be involved in HeForShe. In addition, the campaign has launched more than 1.2 billion conversation on gender equality on social media around the world.
