(CPV) – The Thai ethnic minority people of Lai Chau and Son La provinces in northern Viet Nam celebrate their New Year with fun and playfulness as the snowy white ban (bauhinia) blossoms burst forth on the moutainsides and in the villages. Thai people usually open their Con-Throwing Festival from the first to the sixth day of the first lunar month. They erect a tall bamboo pole with a coloured ring at the top. In the opening ceremony, the village chief holds a Con and prays to deities and ancestors for happiness and wealth. Then he throws the Con toward the ring. After that, boys and girls exchange their Con by throwing them through the ring. Traditionally, boys must throw first. The person whose Con flies through the ring wins a prize. Thai people hold their Kin Pang (Cake-Eating) Festival on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. Every household makes cakes and enters them into the competition held in the village chief’s house. The cooks presenting the trays with the most delicious cakes win an award./.
