A Vietnamese mime artist will have two solo shows in Hanoi this month, hoping to revive the once popular performance art in the country.
Nguyen Hoang Tung, now in his early thirties, will perform eight drama and comedy acts that combine modern and classic mime techniques.
In an act called “Selfie” for instance, he mocks today’s obsession culture.
“Mime became a phenomenon when it came to Vietnam in the 1970s… But then it kept fading and disappeared,” he told Tuoi Tre newspaper.
He said the program, “Kich cam tro lai” (Pantomime returns) is “to serve my personal passion and to give contemporary audiences a special kind of art.”
Tung has performed in other countries including Spain, Japan.
He creates and directs his own performances, with artistic consultancy from Phuc Dzy, a veteran mime artist.
“There might be still difficulties and challenges for the first performances, but I believe this is a much-needed beginning for pantomime to make a comeback in Vietnam,” Tung said.
Check out the shows at Hong Ha Theater, 51 Duong Thanh Street, from 8-11 p.m. on February 7 and 14.

Tickets cost VND100,000 (US$4.7) or VND150,000 ($7). There are concessions for students.
