Guiding light: The blind man and his musical school

A 46-year-old blind man in Ho Chi Minh City has for the last decade devoted his time and effort to teaching other blind people to play music.

Le Van Den of Cu Chi District was born visually impaired.

He left his hometown in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh for Ho Chi Minh City to make a living when he turned 14.

He did many hard jobs and experienced ups and downs until he met a blind music teacher.He was taught how to play the keyboard, using his ears to memorize all the notes.

In 2007, he and his wife, who is also blind, spent all of their savings to build a house.

They have taken in dozens of blind people, homeless children, elders and those with mental illnesses and provided them with accommodation and food.

Den himself taught the blind people how to play music so that they could be earn money on their own. He called the house his own “musical school.”

He bought old keyboards, fixed them and resold them to earn extra money to help the needy people.

So far, he has taught and helped around 100 blind people to play the keyboard.
