Authorities in Cao Bang Province suspended a district-level Communist Party leader after police identified him as the driver of the car that hit and killed three motorists last week.
Police said Lanh Duc Dung was behind the wheel when his vehicle struck a three people on a single motorbike — killing them instantly.
The victims were identified as a 1-year-old child, a 62-year-old woman and a man of 36.
The accident reportedly flipped Dung’s vehicle off the edge of the road leaving it perpendicular to the ground leaning against the front of a shack.
Dung escaped without suffering any serious injuries.
The party head has temporarily stepped down, pending the results of an investigation.
Local officials have visited the victims’ family and offered them financial support for their relatives’ burial.
Ha Ngoc Chien, the head of the provincial party unit, said police are still examining the site and the accident.
The cause of the collision remains unknown, he said, adding that he expects the findings in a few days.
He said anyone found responsible for the accident will be punished strictly without prejudice.
